Lymphoedema Compression Stockings

One of the most common uses for compression stockings is to help manage lymphoedema, a condition where the body’s lymphatic system fails to properly drain fluid from tissue, causing tissue and limbs to swell. In fact, compression stockings form a big part of decongestive lymphatic therapy – the most common treatment for lymphoedema.

How Can Compression Stockings Help with Lymphoedema?

Compression stockings help to encourage fluid to drain from the affected limb. The graduated pressure from the ankle helps to encourage the fluid to leave the leg. By encouraging the fluid to drain out of the limb it also helps to prevent further build-up of fluid by reducing excess flow of fluid.

In addition, it gives the muscles something to work against, encouraging the lymphatic system to work normally.

Which Compression Stockings are Lymphoedema Compression Stockings?

Not all compression stockings are suitable for lymphoedema. Lymphoedema compression stockings are usually much stronger than other compression stockings, although this will depend on the state of the condition.

The best way to know if a pair of compression stockings are suitable for lymphoedema is to check the indications for them. If you’re still unsure after checking the indications, checking with your doctor is your best course of action. In fact, you should only wear compression stockings to help manage lymphoedema at your doctor’s instruction, as it may interfere with the treatment they may be giving you.

Experts recommend that lymphoedema compression stockings are put on first thing in the morning. This is because the swelling will be at a minimum and the stocking can help prevent it worsening throughout the day. Plus, this is when it’s easiest to get on. Experts advise that it’s worn all day, and only taken off before bed.

It’s a good idea to avoid putting the compression stocking on after having a bath or shower as it makes it much more difficult to put on. You should always follow the advice of your doctor, who will know the best way to wear lymphoedema compression stockings.

How to Take Care of Lymphoedema Compression Stockings?

The best way to take care of lymphoedema compression stockings is to wash them regularly. Washing instructions will vary based on who made the compression stockings and the model, however it’s generally better to hand wash them than to machine wash them, and it’s usually a bad idea to put the stockings on a radiator or in a tumble dryer to dry them.

It’s also a good idea to not put on moisturising cream before putting compression stockings on, as not only can it damage the integrity of the compression stockings, but it also makes it harder to put them on.
